The watch face of the Grand Tourbillon Heures Mystérieuses is unique. Its upper half functions as a display window in which the large handcrafted tourbillon that revolves completely around its own axis once a minute can be seen; it compensates for the positional error that negatively affects the accuracy of the movement when the watch is in an upright position. Directly below this mechanism is the timepiece’s other most striking feature: the time display. The hands seem to float across the face in mid-air with no apparent means of propulsion. They are embossed on revolving glass discs driven by mechanisms concealed behind the dial. The discs of the Montblanc timepiece are set against a mirrored background, creating a fascinating illusion of three-dimensionality.
